Healing through dreams

The conventional therapy options are often off-putting for those who have only minor problems and don’t feel like devoting a huge portion of their time and savings to get the problem treated. But does it mean you should do nothing?

What can dreams tell you?

Dream-reading isn’t only the domain of those who deal with the supernatural. It was used by Sigmund Freud to diagnose and treat his patients and still is used in some sorts of mental therapy.

Freud believed that our most hidden “complexes” – basically, the things which are wrong with our psyche – come out in dreams. He used dream interpretation to diagnose his patients’ problems and seek solutions.

According to Freud, dreams are highly symbolic, but the symbols rarely refer to what you can find in a dream dictionary. These are highly individualized symbols which you can decode only with reference to your own life. Of course, some of these symbols are common for all of us – Jung called them archetypes. But they can still have a different meaning for different people.

How to heal through dreams?

Keep a dream journal by your bed and describe your dreams as soon as you wake up. This sort of home therapy won’t cost you much, but it can give you self-knowledge which you won’t find anywhere else.

When you interpret the dreams, try to think of what they mean specifically for you. If you’ve dreamed of an apple, think what apples mean to you. This may be a culturally reinforced meaning – like a forbidden fruit – but it may also be connected to an event from your life, for example, you were denied apples when you were very hungry.
